A Venue I’ve Grown With
Some wedding venues become familiar.
Others become part of your professional journey.
For many years, I have had the pleasure of photographing weddings at The Johnstown Estate, formerly known to many couples as Johnstown House Hotel & Spa. During that time, I have witnessed its remarkable growth, transformation, and continual investment in becoming one of Ireland’s premier wedding destinations.
What has never changed, however, is the feeling that couples experience when they arrive here.
Warmth.
Elegance.
Space to breathe.
And the sense that they are somewhere truly special.
The estate itself traces its history back to the eighteenth century, with the original Johnstown House built in 1761 and remaining the historic heart of the property today. 

A Walk Through the Woods
The photograph above perfectly captures one of my favourite aspects of Johnstown.
Away from the bustle of the reception and celebrations, there are moments where couples can simply disappear into the landscape.
Walking hand in hand beneath towering trees, surrounded by nature, they leave the noise of the day behind and reconnect with each other.
As photographers, we search for moments that feel timeless.
This woodland pathway has provided countless opportunities over the years to create images that feel less like photographs and more like scenes from a storybook.
The estate’s extensive grounds, gardens, and mature woodland continue to provide beautiful backdrops throughout every season. 

A Venue That Never Stops Improving 
One of the things I admire most about Johnstown is its willingness to evolve. 
Over the years I have watched: 

• New facilities emerge
• Reception spaces improve
• Landscaped grounds develop
• Guest experiences expand
• The venue grow into one of the country’s leading wedding destinations

Despite all these changes, the character of the estate remains intact.
The original Georgian residence still sits proudly at the heart of the property, blending history with modern luxury.

A beautiful venue is important.
But atmosphere is everything.
What keeps me returning to Johnstown year after year is not simply the architecture or the grounds.
It’s the people.
The professionalism of the wedding team.
The attention to detail.
The genuine care shown to couples and their families.
Over the years I have worked alongside many members of staff who share the same goal: creating unforgettable wedding days.
That commitment is evident from the moment guests arrive.
The estate itself describes its identity as one built on history, character, warmth, and authentic hospitality—qualities that remain evident today.

I’ve seen it improve.
I’ve seen generations of couples begin their married lives here.
And every time I return through the gates, I know there will be another story waiting to be told.
That is the mark of a truly great wedding venue.
